Speeding and other traffic violations happen occasionally but I don’t recommend it, especially in Sweden. Traffic fines are severe and suppose to scare out from committing an offence.
In this post, I’m going to break down the fines scale and tell you more about fine handling in Sweden.
For most offences, police will issue the ticket you can the traffic fines pay on the spot using a credit card. However, you may choose to pay with a bank transfer and usually, you have up to 2 or 3 weeks to do so. In case of a serious crime committed, the case may go to the public prosecutor for further dealing. Sweden doesn’t have any penalty point system, so the only punishment is a fine.
If you park your car in the wrong place, you can expect to get a fine which may be issued by the police or parking managers and parking attendants. If you want to raise a dispute about the ticket, you must pay first and explain the case later. Depending on the situation, the fine for leaving your car in the wrong place may be up to 1000 SEK (considering your car didn’t need to be towed away.
Parking is a bit tricky in Sweden so stay tuned for an entry about this topic.
Fines for speeding in Sweden
Depending on the allowed speed on the road, two fares are used.
|Over the speed limit||Speed limit|
up to 50 km/h (from)
above 50km/h (from)
|1-10 km/h||2.000 SEK||1.500 SEK|
|11-15 km/h||2.400 SEK||2.000 SEK|
|16-20 km/h||2.800 SEK||2.400 SEK|
|21-25 km/h||3.200 SEK||2.800 SEK|
|26-30 km/h||3.600 SEK||3.200 SEK|
|31-40 km/h||4.000 SEK||3.600 SEK|
|41-50 km/h||lawsuit||4.000 SEK|
As you can see, the lower the speed limit is, the more severe fines are for speeding.
Other traffic fines
Speeding is not the only traffic offence you may commit. In the table below you will find some other scenarios and fines you may be expecting:
|Not wearing a seat belt (driver or passengers above 15 years old)||1.500 SEK|
|Failure to make sure passengers under 15 are wearing a seatbelt (as a driver)||2.500 SEK|
|Insufficient depth of the thread in tires||1.200 SEK|
|Not using winter tires if required (1 December – 31 March in winter conditions)||1.200 SEK|
|Driving without lights in the dark||1.200 SEK|
|Driving too close to the next vehicle||2.000 SEK|
Alcohol and driving in Sweden
It is allowed to drive a car if you have no more than 0,2‰ of alcohol in your system. Fines will apply if the concentration is higher and they depend on your income-related amount between 50 SEK and 1000 SEK multiplied by the score 40-100 (indicated by the alcohol concentration). If you drive with more than 1‰, you will get a lawsuit and at least 1 month of prison and driving disqualification.
If a will to be a decent resident doesn’t convince you not to commit any offences, high traffic fines certainly will. These are just starting amounts and can be higher depending on the situation and circumstances. Stay safe!
