Each week, I’m sharing an image that creatively interprets a popular Swedish idiom.

I’ll be posting a new idiom every Monday (due to Easter we’re late this time), so keep an eye out and test your knowledge of Swedish expressions each week. It’s all about having fun, learning a bit of Swedish culture, and maybe even impressing your friends with your idiom knowledge! 💭✨

Köpa grisen i säcken – translates literally to buy the pig in the sack. Figuratively, it means to buy something without knowing what it really is and therefore how valuable it is; to do something costly without knowing what you will gain from it.

Examples:
✅ Han köpte bilen osedd. Han köpte grisen i säcken. (He bought the car unseen. He bought a pig in a poke.)
✅ Fråga mer om jobbet. Köp inte grisen i säcken. (Ask more about the job. Don’t buy a pig in a poke.)
✅ Hotellet var dåligt. Vi köpte grisen i säcken online. (The hotel was bad. We bought a pig in a poke online.)

🔴 Why am I not recording in Swedish?

This question pops up sometimes in the comments or my DMs and there are two main reasons:

✅ My mission is to reach Internationals in Sweden - there are bigger chances to do so in English. While Swedes are more than welcome here 🫶 it’s easier for them to understand English than for newcomers or tourists to understand Swedish. And there are already plenty of Swedish-speaking sources 🥰

✅ Despite of living here for 4 years and learning Swedish even longer, even tho I feel pretty comfortable in my everyday life conversations or professional contacts with my Swedish-speaking clients, speaking Swedish in front of the camera still feels uncomfortable and a bit embarrassing so this was a huge step out of my comfort zone (at the same time it’s so much needed - I want to feel more self-confident in every situation).

My main goal for 2025 is to improve my Swedish, let’s call it my first step. Do I make mistakes? Of course. But we never stop learning. And let this be a message to all of you learning Swedish as well - the more you try, the better you become ❤️

🔴 Why am I not recording in Swedish?

This question pops up sometimes in the comments or my DMs and there are two main reasons:

✅ My mission is to reach Internationals in Sweden - there are bigger chances to do so in English. While Swedes are more than welcome here 🫶 it’s easier for them to understand English than for newcomers or tourists to understand Swedish. And there are already plenty of Swedish-speaking sources 🥰

🔴 Summer beer may be now illegal?

Just as the sun comes out and the outdoor terraces start filling up - here comes the buzzkill ☀️🍻

A recent court ruling is now being used to block alcohol licenses for places with only outdoor seating. No indoor area? No booze.

It all started with one case in Karlstad - and now some municipalities, like Stockholm, are saying it’s the law.
Restaurateurs and legal experts are pushing back hard.
 They say the law was never meant to exclude open-air venues - and that the courts are reading it way too narrowly.

Meanwhile, seasonal bars are left waiting… and hoping someone rewrites the rules before summer slips away.
