During our Road Trip 2024 we had one rule about food – we eat what is local for places we visit. So we couldn’t do anything else but look for a German restaurant in Berlin to fulfil our cravings for curry wurst. That is how we found Alt-Berliner Wirtshaus restaurant.
Location of Alt-Berliner Wirtshaus
The restaurant is located just few minutes walk from the Brandenburg Gate. We were a bit afraid it may be a catch for tourists but because there were a lot of people already sitting there, the weather was nice and there were places outside, we decided to give it a shot.
It was actually hard to tell what is the name of this place because there were a lot of different brands on the walls but to make sure you find the right place, I made a picture of the entrance.
Menu at Alt-Berliner Wirtshaus
In the menu you can find typical dishes for German cuisine so, of course, there is a lot of different kinds of beer, especially large ones (and by that I mean 1L mugs – shock for every Swede that’s got used to Systembolaget and 0,33L capacity in Swedish restaurants).
Besides alcohol, you can enjoy some German classics like curry wurst, riesenbuletten or kasselerbraten. Because most of main dishes are just meat with potatoes in different forms, we decided to add a salad to share for better digesting 😅
Alt-Berliner Wirtshaus – Food Review
I ordered traditional curry wurst (€17), Tomas decided to go for “Eckensteher Nante” (€20) – classic berliner “meatball” (as they call it by themselves) with bratkartoffeln (German style potatoes fried with bacon and onion slices). The salad we went for was “Schrebergarten” (€11) – salad, cucumber, tomato, pepper, diced onion and feta cheese. To drink, we decided to take 0,5L Berliner Kind beer (€4,80).
Curry Wurst was a flavour I was looking for. I’ve never had that dish before in Germany, just once or twice back in Poland but this one was better than I’ve ever had. Portion consists of two sausages with delicious curry sauce and steak fries – it was big enough to make me full.
Tomas was happy with his giant meatball (I have to admit, the English translation of this dish is what made him order it). He liked it but for me, personally, the potatoes were stronger point of the dish.
Both dishes have problem of not enough vegetables on a plate (but it’s not a fault of the restaurant, it is just how this cuisine works) so the salad we ordered was a perfect addition and balanced all the flavours, making the whole meal a pleasant experience.
Good to know
Being so close to the Brandenburg Gate, place is well prepared for international clientele. The menu is available in a few languages (including English) and the staff can communicate in those languages so you shouldn’t have any problems. They are so nice and helpful in pronouncing German words as well.
Summary
This was our first restaurant meal on our Road Trip and was so good it set the bar high for our future experiences. If you’re ever hungry and nearby, step in and you wouldn’t be disappointed. Overall, eating at Alt-Berliner Wirtshaus was so nice and relaxing experience.
