Our annual semla test comes back in 2025! Tomorrow is Fettisdagen (Shrove Tuesday). That means it’s time to choose the best semla in Göteborg by LikeSweden.com.
What is Semla?
Semla (plural: semlor) is a traditional Swedish dessert – cardamom bun filled with sweet, almond paste and unsweetened whipped cream with cute little cap at the top. It’s available usually only in January and February – this year we’re lucky, Fettisdag is in March so we have a whole week longer to enjoy our semlor.
Choosing the Best Semla
I asked on my Instagram which places serve the best semla in Göteborg. I’ve chosen top 5 options that we decided to try on the vlog. Because eating that many semlor may be difficult (at least for me), I took my team (husband Tomasz and dad to the first spot) and we begun our tour.
All scores were assigned after trying all semlor so we could compare them all. I’m listing them from the worst to the best (however, remember these are still top5 places recommended by you).
Steinbrenner & Nyberg
This place definitely wins the award regarding decor and atmosphere – it’s unique and cozy, enjoying your fika in such environment is nothing but pleasure. Unfortunately, this was the worst of semlor we’ve tried during our test. The bun and whipped cream were great, everything was overwhelmed by the almond paste that had more of marzipan in it, with a lot of sugar and strange almond aftertaste that reminded me only of artificial flavourings.

daMatteo
Place known mostly for their coffee semlor however for the sake of this test we’ve tried only classic ones (I’ve not seen them available anyway). During our first day they were completely sold-out so we came back the next day. It was the smallest one, for Tomasz also the worst one.

Konditori Kampanillen
This was the first spot we’ve visited and it was already a promising one. The top part seemed a bit dry at the beginning however overall this semla was just everything you need from that dessert.

Brogyllen
This was probably your top1 choice regarding the best semla in Göteborg. They have several locations in the city, we had two attempts to try their semlor as during our first try the location was totally sold-out and the number of people queueing was just crazy. For the second attempt we chose location at Landala and it was a great choice.

Ahlströms Konditori – LikeSweden choice
Ahlströms is the oldest cafe in Göteborg, opened in 1901 and it’s visible in every inch of this place. They offered the biggest choice – besides classic semlor they offered wiener, gluten-free, vanilla and mini option (this was absolutely the cutest little semla I’ve ever seen). They also won our test in 2025 – if you’re about to try just one semla, this should be the one ❤️
