Vienna means wiener schnitzel and if wiener schnitzel, then only in Bauernbräu Wien. We knew that no matter what we need to eat it so despite of having so little time in the city, I’ve found one of the best reviewed restaurant – Bauernbräu Wien – where we headed right after the evening show at Raimund Teater.
Location of Bauernbräu Wien
The restaurant is located nearby the train station Wien Westbahnhof, only 230 m from Raimund Teater (where I definitely recommend to see The Phantom of the Opera show which is completely different than West End original – the staging is absolutely stunning and don’t even hesitate, book your tickets now).
Bauernbräu Wien is located on the bottom floor of The Arik Brauer House (also: Brauer House) which a residential building built between 1991 and 1994. The artistic design in the style of fantastic realism was undertaken by Arik Brauer, and the architect was Peter Pelikan.
The street façade above the Bauernbräu Wien restaurant shows two pictures made up of numerous tiles and measuring around 150 m² in total. According to the artist, the picture represents the struggle for harmony. In the entrance area there is a ceiling painting and two aquariums, and the corridors and stairwells have also been artistically designed. The skylights of the apartment doors are painted, and the bathrooms have been decorated with tile pictures if requested by the tenants.
Since the house is located in the densely built-up Mariahilfer district of Gumpendorf and there are no large parks or similar green spaces in the immediate vicinity, great importance was also placed on green living. The attic apartments have roof gardens, the corridors on the individual floors have been decorated with green plants, and the inner courtyard has green areas, a small biotope and a fountain.
Menu at Bauernbräu Wien
In the menu you can find classic Austrian dishes and that is what I recommend but if you want to try something else, the restaurant offers also burgers and sandwiches.
As I mentioned, our main goal was to try wiener schnitzel so we both ordered one. I’ve chosen option with cooked potatoes with parsley. Tomas got convinced by the waiter to check the dish in more traditional way and choose potato salad.
To drink we both took a beer recommended to us by the staff.
Bauernbräu Wien – Food Review
What can I say – almost 2000 reviews on Google and score of 4,7/5 can’t be wrong. I fell in love with that schnitzel from the first bite and it was like a dream come true. The schnitzel comes also with lingonberry jam, which we all know so well from Sweden, and a lemon wedge.
Interesting option was that potato salad. It was served cold and the flavour was an unique combination of sweet potatoes and a bit sour onion, giving nice and tasty outcome.
Good to know
This was the second restaurant visited during out road trip and I was so amazed by how friendly and helpful the staff was in both of those places. Yes, people here were amazing. We showed up nearly last minute and got seated, received the best recommendations for the dishes and beer and had a chance to talk a while about us, our trip and living in Sweden.
Summary
Visit in this place was an unforgettable experience full of warmth in our hearts, souls and stomachs. I’m looking forward to coming back to Vienna and re-visit Bauernbräu, not only to eat once again delicious food but also meet the lovely staff that made that evening so special.
