What happens when creativity meets community? At our recent silver jewellery-making workshop in Göteborg, magic was in the air as participants gathered to craft beautiful pieces while forming meaningful connections. Keep reading to discover the inspiration behind the workshop, the details of the event, and the creative energy that brought it all together!

Why We Organized a Jewellery-Making Workshop in Göteborg

Sweden is often celebrated for its breathtaking landscapes, progressive values, and high quality of life, but it’s no secret that it can be a challenging place to form friendships – especially for immigrants. Even Swedes themselves sometimes admit to struggling with loneliness, and for those of us who have moved here, adulthood often amplifies the difficulty of starting over socially in a new country. The routines of daily life can leave little room for meaningful interactions, making it all the more important to create opportunities to connect.

That’s exactly why this workshop was so important to me. I wanted to provide my community with a space to come together, enjoy a fun and creative activity, and most importantly, share time and conversation. It wasn’t just about making beautiful silver jewellery – it was about fostering connection and building a sense of belonging. After all, there’s something uniquely powerful about creating something with your hands while forming new friendships.

By filling the bags with locally crafted products, I hoped to not only express my gratitude but also to showcase the incredible talent that exists within our community. It was a small way to set the tone for an inspiring day filled with connection, creativity, and joy.

Inside each gift bag, participants discovered:

Tvåla&Tvaga and their handmade soaps

A special thanks goes out to Tvåla&Tvåga, the fantastic sponsor of our gift bags, for bringing a touch of local craftsmanship to our jewellery-making workshop in Göteborg. Each participant received one of their beautiful, handmade soaps, randomly chosen from four unique scents: Haga, Havet, Magnifik, or Fantastisk. These soaps were such a thoughtful addition, adding a little moment of luxury to the experience.

If you’re not familiar with Tvåla&Tvåga, they’re a beloved soap boutique based in Göteborg, founded in 2012 by Anna Stenegärd. Anna’s journey into soap-making started with a fascination for the craft and a weekend course that inspired her to dive deeper into the world of natural, artisanal soap. Since then, she’s built a business that celebrates high-quality, handmade products with a strong focus on sustainability and creativity.

What makes Tvåla&Tvåga so special is that they also have their very own soap factory in Slakthusområdet, Gamlestaden, where every soap is handmade in small batches of no more than 44 at a time. This ensures each soap gets the attention and care it deserves. They use only organic ingredients, and their products are not just good for your skin but designed to be a complete sensory experience. It’s all about the rich lather, the soothing scents, and the little moments of joy these soaps bring to your day.

The scents we chose for the gift bags were perfect for the occasion:

  • Haga – A tribute to lovely Haga. Handmade organic full body soap with the scent of blooming lilac and fresh citrus. Mild and moisturizing. Organic ingredients, nothing strange added, no palm oil.
  • Havet – The scent is citrusy but has clear marina tones and a pleasant herbaceousness. The soap is made in collaboration with Skärgårdshotellet on Hönö and contains sugar seaweed grown and harvested by Ten Island Seafarm.
  • Magnifik – A super-fatted soap with shea butter, which makes it super creamy and really mild. The invigorating, strengthening scent comes from essential lime oil and essential coriander oil.
  • Fantastisk – Full body soap with a fresh mint scent. The fresh mint scent comes from spearmint essential oil and eucalyptus essential oil, which provides a very refreshing and invigorating washing experience.

Meet the Experts: Who Led the Jewellery-Making Workshop in Göteborg

We were incredibly fortunate to have Stefan Salomonsson lead our silver jewellery-making workshop, bringing his extensive experience and passion for the craft to guide our group through the creative process.

Stefan is a skilled gold and silversmith based in Göteborg, where he operates his studio in the historic Kronhusbodarna area. His journey into jewellery-making began in 1992 when he moved to India and apprenticed under a master goldsmith in Rajasthan. There, he immersed himself in traditional techniques, laying the foundation for his unique style.

Upon returning to Sweden, Stefan continued to hone his skills, taking courses in hand engraving and stone setting. He established his studio in Kronhusbodarna, a charming 18th-century setting with cobblestone courtyards, where he not only creates and exhibits his unique pieces but also conducts courses and workshops.

Stefan’s philosophy centers on creating “one of a kind” jewellery, ensuring that each piece carries its own story and uniqueness. His dedication to genuine craftsmanship and timeless design was evident throughout our workshop, as he patiently guided participants in crafting their own unique pieces.

Having Stefan lead our workshop was truly inspiring. His passion and expertise not only taught us the technical aspects of jewellery-making but also instilled a deeper appreciation for the art and history behind each piece.

For those interested in exploring their own creativity, Stefan offers a variety of courses suitable for all skill levels, including full-day, and weekend sessions. It’s a fantastic opportunity to learn from a master craftsman in a supportive and inspiring environment.

We are grateful to Stefan and his colleague Signe for making our workshop an unforgettable experience.

Crafting Memories: How the Jewellery-Making Workshop in Göteborg Unfolded

The jewellery-making workshop in Göteborg was a creative journey where every participant had the chance to design and craft their very own silver jewellery. The main choices were between a hard silver bracelet or a ring, with the option to embed stones for an extra personal touch. Interestingly, our group unanimously decided to create rings, though we divided into two sub-groups based on technique and style preferences.

One group, led by Signe (Stefan’s colleague), focused on crafting single, thicker rings with beautifully hammered textures, while the other opted for “stack-on rings” – delicate, thinner bands, often with stones, designed to be worn together in sets of two to four. The other group was led by Stefan.

I was part of the group creating single textured rings with Signe. The process began with selecting a design, measuring finger sizes, and choosing the ring width. Once the materials were prepared, we moved on to hammering textures into the silver strips, bringing our unique designs to life. Next came bending the strips into the desired ring shape, soldering the joints, and rounding out the final shape. Special care was taken to ensure that the texture flowed seamlessly across the soldered joint.

The final steps involved removing copper residue from the silver and polishing it to achieve a brilliant shine and color. For those who wanted an extra touch of character, the rings could also undergo a process of oxidation, darkening the silver and making the textures stand out even more dramatically.

Throughout the workshop, the atmosphere was warm and sociable. There was a wonderful energy as we worked on our pieces, chatted, and supported one another. To keep the creative juices flowing, we were treated to a variety of refreshments, including cold drinks, coffee, and a delicious selection of snacks – both savoury and sweet. Of course, no Swedish gathering is complete without a slice of kladdkaka, the traditional gooey chocolate cake that added a perfect touch to the day.

A Day to Remember – And the First of Many

This silver jewellery-making workshop was not just about crafting beautiful rings – it was about building connections, sharing creativity, and creating lasting memories. It was the very first event of its kind organized by LikeSweden, but it’s definitely not the last! Seeing the joy, inspiration, and sense of accomplishment in the group made it clear that these gatherings are something special.
