A Nearly Normal Family (2023)
The Sandells are an ordinary family – Pastor Adam, lawyer Ulrika and their 19-year-old daughter Stella. The three of them lead a perfect life in the suburbs of Lund. One day, Stella is arrested as a murder suspect. Her parents don’t know what to do. What really happened?
Clark (2022)
The fiction Swedish series “Clark” is the story of the man who contributed to the creation of the term “Stockholm syndrome”. We see how he managed to beguile and charm the whole of Sweden, despite of being involved in drug smuggling, attempted murder, assaults, thefts and bank robberies. The series is based on the facts and lies revealed in Clark Olofsson’s autobiography and is a fictionalized story of one of the most controversial people in modern Sweden.
The Playlist (2022)
The main characters of the “Playlista” Swedish series are Daniel Ek, a young Swedish entrepreneur from the new technologies sector, and his closest partners who revolutionised the entire industry by offering free and legal songs via streaming to audiences around the world. This is a story about how faithfulness to one’s own beliefs, iron consistency, achievements and big dreams can help small players challenge the status quo and change our music listening habits.
Snabba Cash (2021)
A Swedish series that is reboot set in Stockholm 10 years after the events shown in “Snabba Cash” film trilogy. The main character is Leya – a single mother trying to find her way in a start-up environment where money and status count – two things that she also wants most. The elite of entrepreneurs are as brutal and ruthless as the bosses of the criminal underworld, so when these two worlds get in the way, the fight for quick cash reaches new levels of intensity. And when blood is shed, friendship, loyalty and business deals take a backseat.
Young Royals (2021)
When Prince William starts studying at Hillerska, a prestigious boarding school, he finally has the opportunity to get to know himself better and decide what he cares about in life. Soon, Wilhelm begins to dream of freedom and unconditional love away from courtly obligations. Unexpectedly, he becomes the heir to the throne and now his dilemma becomes even more difficult, because the moment of choosing between love and duty is approaching.
Love & Anarchy (2020)
The heroine of the eight-episode Swedish series is Sofie – a workaholic, married and mother of two children. Sofie is tasked with modernising an old publishing house, where she meets a young IT specialist, Max. Unexpectedly, the two start flirting with each other and engage in a dangerous game. Sofie and Max secretly pose challenges to each other that challenge modern values. It all starts innocently enough, but as the challenges become more daring, their consequences get out of control.
Caliphate (2020) – One of my favourites Swedish series on Netflix
The heroines of this suspenseful series are women whose fates are intertwined with religious fanaticism. Pervin comes from Sweden and lives in Syria. Her husband joined Islamic State regime, so she decides to return to Europe with her child. In Sweden, she is helped by Fatima, a secret service officer. The price Pervin has to pay for a new life is the revelation of her husband’s terrorist plans in Sweden.
Meanwhile, three lost teenagers: Sulle, Lisha and Kerima, fall under the influence of Ibbe, a teacher’s assistant from their school, who makes the girls become interested in a radical version of Islam. Muslim fundamentalists are getting closer to carrying out an attack in Sweden.
Quicksand (2019)
“Quicksand” is a series based on the best-selling novel by Malin Persson Giolito, published in 26 countries, which was hailed as the best Nordic crime novel of 2016. A shooting occurs at a private high school in a wealthy neighbourhood on the outskirts of Stockholm. During the trial of average high school student Maja Norberg, secrets about the tragic day and her relationship with Sebastian Fagerman and his dysfunctional family are revealed.
Bonus Family (2017)
The series revolves around the two main characters Lisa and Patrik, a Stockholm couple in their 40s who have both recently gone their separate ways. Both have their own ten-year-old son and Lisa also has a teenage daughter. Katja, Patrik’s ex-wife is an architect, while Lisa’s ex-husband, Martin, works in a bed store. The series follows the grim relationship between the newlyweds and their former spouses and what it’s like for both parties’ children to live in a bonus family. During the course of the series, you also get to see how it is for Patrik to deal with his wife Lisa’s ten-year-old son Eddie, who is a rowdy kid, along with Patrik’s own son William, who is a much more calm and well-mannered person.
