The first full ban came in 1756 because coffee was seen as:
💸 bad for the economy
🎩 too luxurious
💀 and supposedly bad for your health

And this was not just some dusty old rule nobody cared about.
Authorities actually did raids 🚔 confiscated coffee cups, kettles, and full coffee sets and people could get fined too 💰

And still… people kept drinking it anyway 😌
So after all that chaos, coffee was finally legalized for good in 1823 and now Sweden is one of the biggest coffee-drinking countries in the world.

There’s also that famous story about King Gustav III trying to prove coffee was dangerous with a weird prisoner experiment 👑
But that part is most likely legend, not confirmed fact 📚

So yes:
🚫 the coffee bans were real
🤴 the royal experiment is probably just Sweden’s most dramatic coffee myth
