The comments quickly went from “Oh no!” to people passionately defending their favourite knäckebröd like it was a constitutional right.
One thing is clear: if you want engagement in Sweden, don’t talk politics... talk knäckebröd 🇸🇪😂

🍝 Sweden`s biggest supermarket chain just walked away from Barilla. And the surprise casualty? Wasa knäckebröd.

ICA, the country`s largest grocery chain, has ended its contract with the Italian food giant Barilla in a pricing dispute. Pasta, pesto and sauces are already disappearing from the shelves.

The plot twist most Swedes didn`t see coming: Barilla also owns Wasa, the iconic Swedish crispbread brand that has been made since 1919 and still sits in nearly every Swedish kitchen.

So the crispbread is going too 🥲

ICA says the terms couldn`t be agreed and that walking away is better for shoppers long term. Neither side is sharing details. Talks are technically still open.

If you need your usual pasta or crispbread from ICA, you`ll have to head to Coop, Willys or Hemköp for now. Or ask your ICA store to order it in at a higher price.

⌚ One of Sweden’s biggest Instagram-era brand success stories is officially no longer Swedish-owned.

Daniel Wellington, the minimalist watch brand you saw on approximately every travel influencer’s wrist between 2013 and 2018, has just been fully acquired by American watchmaker Timex.

Founder Filip Tysander, who started the company in 2011 in a basement in Uppsala, has sold his last remaining shares. Price: not disclosed 💸

The story is fascinating: thin watches manufactured in China, Scandinavian minimalist design, and one of the first global brands built almost entirely through Instagram influencer marketing. In 2016 and 2017 alone, the company posted combined profits of 1.8 billion kronor. Tysander became a billionaire.

Then the model slowed. By 2019, the company was losing money. Timex bought 25% in 2023, then over 50% last year, and now the rest.

The CEO stays. The Swedish chapter closes.

I had my SVA 3 national oral exam today! 🇸🇪

The exam was supposed to have two parts:
🗣️ a 5-minute presentation on a topic of our choice
💬 followed by a discussion where we react to someone else’s presentation.

I chose to talk about loanwords in Swedish and how other languages have shaped the Swedish vocabulary over time.

The discussion part was actually skipped today. I think that’s because two exam groups were merged due to summer staffing, so there simply wasn’t enough time for everyone. Instead, we finished after our presentations.

Now... all that’s left is waiting for the result. 🤞

Normally bars in Stockholm can serve until 5am, already late (or early 👀) for Sweden. But for the football World Cup, the city temporarily pushed that to 8am so fans can catch matches across time zones.

Now the Moderates, Christian Democrats, Liberals and Centre Party have called an emergency meeting to make it permanent. The Greens are also on board. Their argument: it helps restaurants, boosts nightlife, and makes Stockholm more fun 🌃

But the Social Democrats, who chair the deciding committe, aren`t buying it. They say 5am is already enough for basically everyone.

The proposal, presented by Civil Affairs Minister Erik Slottner, would allow courts to impose fines on companies whose customer service falls below acceptable standards.

Rules about "reasonable response times" already exist in Sweden. But until now, ignoring them had no consequences. That`s what`s changing 📞

The scope covers: retail, hotels, restaurants, construction and tradespeople, and personal services like hairdressers and beauty salons.

The reasoning: when customer service is impossible to reach, people get trapped in contracts they actually want to cancel. And that`s the point where the government wants to step in.

The Consumer Authority (Konsumentverket) will monitor and enforce.

Proposed start date: 1 March 2027.
